Drawn from the web site of a nursery in Denver, these lists suggest when it might be safe to plant out newly started annual flowering plants, vegetables, and very young perennial plants. The dates have been edited to reflect the fact that Denver’s last frost is about two weeks later than ours.
Weather varies a lot; and those used to living on, say, Long Island where daily temperature swings are low and seasons change more slowly and steadily will find planning an orderly transition from cold to warm season a little hard to adapt to. Altitude, exposure, humidity, and many other factors can play a profound role in frost damage. This list provides a starting point, a point for comparison.
It is constructed around the assumption that our last frost is around May 5.th About 90% of the time it’s before this: usually by a week or two, occasionally four or six. In spring of 2018 the last frost might have been in April. In spring of 2019, however, our last light frost occurred well into the third week of May, nipping new foliage off of eggplants and grapes. This explains the local practice of planting tender annuals is Mother’s Day is just a little safer for the tenderest plants.
Plants with more frost hardiness, though, will usually benefit from an earlier start. A good portion of the plants on the Hardy Plants list will stay green through winter and spring, and so will benefit from fall planting. Just remember to harden off any quickly growing plants by exposing them to some cool weather before planting out.
